Mr. K. Gough

I'm Mr. Gough, the social studies teacher for the Voyagers.  This school year marks my seventh year at HMS and twelfth year in the classroom.

I developed a passion for social studies at home thanks to my dad's encyclopedic knowledge of John F. Kennedy.  Several passionate teachers in Hammond and Merrillville helped further inspire me to pursue a life of learning and history. I studied social studies education at Indiana University and completed my student teaching practicum at Martinsville West Middle School in 2007.  Shortly after, I joined the Peace Corps and served as volunteer in eastern Ukraine for over two years. My time in Ukraine was spent working as an English teacher, organizing community events, leading summer camps, and building connections between American and Ukrainian classrooms.  Sharing these experiences is one of my favorite parts of teaching.

Teaching is the only job I could ever see myself doing. I get to spend time with great people, explore fascinating periods of history, and watch students grow.

During my time as a teacher, I have taught:
  • 7th grade - world history
  • 8th grade - American history
  • 7th & 8th grade - English/Language Arts
  • Adult ESL courses
  • Poetry, Russian, Drama, and Environmental Clubs

Some of my personal interests and hobbies include:
  • Visiting museums, state parks, and historic sites
  • Making homemade muffins, pizza, and pierogi
  • Reading fantasy, history, and comic books
  • Listening to metal and punk
  • Playing board games
  • Collecting fossils
  • Watching Mystery Science Theater 3000
  • Playing guitar
